Hi 5 folks – earth-friendly is the main keyword here – all it would take to eradicate the toxins and most toxic earth-un-friendly chemicals is the super markets to clamp down on these companies who produce them – it needs to be lead by the shoppers who make these super markets as big as they are but unfortunately in todays economy all that matters to the vast majority of folks is the bottom line on the till receipt – toxins or chemical who cares as long as its the cheapest product – we all have that – let someone else worry about saving the planet its not my job I just kinda live on it – huh! – lol

Hi jim,

I saw “Soylent Green” and can relate to the ire, and disgust of Charlton Heston’s character. I am constantly flabbergasted at the flagrant disregard for the truth illustrated by those who would seek to pad their pockets in the name of “progress” or “greater production”.

It is this very dilemma, spawned by greed, that has opened the gates to other genetic science machinations such as cloning. Following the money grubber’s logic, where do we draw the line in defining a “natural” person?

It seems to me the only ones who believe this line has been blurred are those who have bought into the lies perpetrated by those who seek to make profit from this folly.

Thanks again for daring to be a vocal critical thinker.

Actually I feel it is safe to say many people who failed this simple quiz can and DO live in a vacuum … of knowledge. Sadly, many marketers, knowing this, take full advantage of this unhealthy public condition. (Shame, Shame, Shame!)

Jim, there has been quite a gray-ing of definitions lately. The scariest is in food. What is natural anymore? The whole GMO concept is a bit scary to me. I do not have a soylent green phobia, but what is going into our food? I really appreciate this blog because you discuss these ideas in an open manner. Thanks!

Interesting post. There are differences in what we consider ‘good food’ for sure. What ever happened to just plain natural? My breakfast almost every morning is a delicious soy protein shake. Soy is a biologically complete protein source. But here again, I have to be careful to choose Non-GMO Soy protein. Of course the brand I have used for 25 years makes this and has taken the time to educate us about it. We really do have to do our homework in regard to the food we feed our bodies, and it takes time and investigation as you have shown in your posts.

GMO is a serious concern and the long-term implications are very disturbing. No one knows how years of eating GMO food will affect the human body. I’m a vegetarian – vegan, when possible – and so I’ve loved the Morningstar Farms veggie burgers, ‘chicken nuggets’, etc. – then I read they use GMO in their recipes. I’ve quit them now, but it’s too bad. We can’t assume that any food is as Mother Nature made it unless we inform ourselves. Even the companies that call themselves ‘health food’ manufacturers will sell this stuff. Our lifestyle is the single biggest factor in determining how healthy we will be – or not. The entire raging debate about national health care proves just how serious this problem is. To a huge extent, our health is in our own hands.

You make a good point – that we need to be more careful in our choice of words. Technically, just about everything is a chemical and casually using the word as a synonym for ‘terrible/poison/danger’, etc., is very unhelpful to understanding our environment. A more precise and accurate term would be “toxin”. There are definitely toxins and chemicals that are more benign in most household products. One way to avoid the whole issue and to save money is to make our own household cleaning products which is what I do most of the time. I noticed a commercial for a toilet cleaning “pad” on TV the other day and checked out the product next time I was in the grocery. The price was very high and I shudder to think of the ingredients going into our water supply. Vinegar is much cheaper, much safer and works incredibly well as a toilet cleaner.
