A podcast with my thoughts on people’s perception of the word “chemical” (be patient, it may take a moment to load):

Interesting question isn’t it?
Read the short post below and listen to the podcast above and see why I believe a lot of people really don’t know the answer!
Many people seem to think that if household cleaning products (or other products for that matter) contain chemicals, they must be toxic, unsafe or not earth-friendly. Part of the issue again comes down to a combination of multiple meanings for a term, in this case chemical, as well as confusion about chemicals that might be in various products.
The fundamental meaning of the word chemical relates to the fact that all matter is made of the chemical elements. Therefore the only time there would not be chemicals present if there was an absolute vacuum. We could not survive in an absolute vacuum!
Everything around us is chemical.
The air is a mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc.
Water is H2O and we can’t live without it!
Arsenic is a naturally occurring chemical element we can pretty much live without!
Every material in the environment around us including our household cleaning products consists of chemical compounds and nothing, other than an absolute vacuum can be 100% chemical free ….
Keep these facts in mind as you listen to the podcast and please leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts!

Call it a chemical or call them toxins, either way there is danger that has been proven in these toxic cleaning products. I say YES, there are chemicals in cleaning products (that are not green) and YES they are dangerous. We can’t control chemicals and toxins everywhere in our lives, but we can control products that we bring into our homes and that we breathe while we clean, and after.
Jim, that is an interesting point that you make. Everything in our world can be classified from a chemical perspective. Some chemicals are more dangerous than others. Water is a healthy chemical, until toxins seep into it through the ground. Then it can be a dangerous, if not deadly chemical. I believe the issue of chemicals revolve around chemical toxicity and how to eliminate or effectively manage toxic chemicals in our lives and environment Thanks!.

It doesn’t get much more organic/green and safe than water. Save money and the Earth and be clean at the same time…yes! Get serious and add Bathroom Bidet Sprayers to all your bathrooms. Available at http://www.bathroomsprayers.com with these you won’t even need toilet paper any more, just a towel to dry off! It’s cheap and can be installed without a plumber; and runs off the same water line to your toilet. You’ll probably pay for it in a few months of toilet paper savings. And after using one of these you won’t know how you lasted all those years with wadded up handfuls of toilet paper. Now we’re talking green and helping the environment without any pain. Don’t Say It Spray It! http://davidstanleyblog.blogspot.com/
You make a good point – that we need to be more careful in our choice of words. Technically, just about everything is a chemical and casually using the word as a synonym for ‘terrible/poison/danger’, etc., is very unhelpful to understanding our environment. A more precise and accurate term would be “toxin”. There are definitely toxins and chemicals that are more benign in most household products. One way to avoid the whole issue and to save money is to make our own household cleaning products which is what I do most of the time. I noticed a commercial for a toilet cleaning “pad” on TV the other day and checked out the product next time I was in the grocery. The price was very high and I shudder to think of the ingredients going into our water supply. Vinegar is much cheaper, much safer and works incredibly well as a toilet cleaner.

Hi Jim,
Actually I feel it is safe to say many people who failed this simple quiz can and DO live in a vacuum … of knowledge. Sadly, many marketers, knowing this, take full advantage of this unhealthy public condition. (Shame, Shame, Shame!)
Once again you’ve put the pabulum puking product hucksters in their place where they belong! It is always refreshing to get honest insights from someone who clearly knows of what he speaks.
I appreciate you,
Bill Tessore

Hi 5 folks – earth-friendly is the main keyword here – all it would take to eradicate the toxins and most toxic earth-un-friendly chemicals is the super markets to clamp down on these companies who produce them – it needs to be lead by the shoppers who make these super markets as big as they are but unfortunately in todays economy all that matters to the vast majority of folks is the bottom line on the till receipt – toxins or chemical who cares as long as its the cheapest product – we all have that – let someone else worry about saving the planet its not my job I just kinda live on it – huh! – lol
All the best to you and your top-lines
